I’m an author and journalist. After 30 years as a producer with NBC News and as a producer and executive with ABC News, I now write books and do a lot of public speaking. My topics are wide ranging: American journalism, African American history, women’s history, philanthropy, fitness both physical and fiscal, women entrepreneurs and African American entrepreneurs. My biographies of Madam C. J. Walker, my great-great-grandmother, have led me to explore the universal interest in family history that all cultures share. I’m now at work on the first major biography of my great-grandmother, A’Lelia Walker, who was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Initially I began writing about the Walker women to explore American history–and their role as entrepreneurs, philanthropists, political activists and arts patrons–through the eyes of African American women. I continue to write about them–and to explore the history of other families and cultures–as a means to empower others.
